June 22, 2007.  Elaine, Claudette, and I spent a day diving the Elsie I off Huntington Beach.  The Elsie I is a play on words of LCI (Landing Craft Infantry).  The Elsie I started its life in New Jersey in 1945.  It spent time on both the East Coast and the South Pacific including the invasion of Guam in 1944.  After the war, it eventually found itself back in SoCal where it was converted into a fishing barge.  It sank in a bad storm in 1951 taking the life of its barge master.  It broke in half during the sinking and the two halves now lay about a half mile apart.    The vessel was about 150 ft long by 23 ft wide.  These pictures show both halves of the wreck.

The California Wreck Divers Page is the best source of information on the wreck
